How to Help Your Child Choose a Major in College That They will Love

Being a mother is a full time job, and it doesn’t stop when your child goes off to college. Your “baby” may say that he or she has it all together and that they no longer need mom or dad’s help, but a healthy balance of family love and having them learn independence on their own is what matters. Once they are in college they will eventually ask for your help in deciding on what to major in and as a mother, you will play a huge part in helping them make a decision. When they do ask for your advice, you’ll most definitely know which direction to push them towards and if you’re not sure, you can learn right along with them.
Remind them of their Current Interests and What They Excel
In When it’s time for your child to choose a major, ask them which classes they have liked the most so far. If they love to read and have an interest in authors and literature, English might be a good major for them. If they love to help others and feel like traveling the world with cultural influence, perhaps Anthropology is their calling. Your job as a parent is to point them in the right direction, but it is ultimately up to them in regards to what major they decide to pursue.
Encourage Them to Write Down Goals
No child will get very far without tangible goals, so why not encourage them to write some down? Have them figure out a month to month goal, and then a yearly goal. Even if everything does not get accomplished, having solid goals in place is what counts. Their goals will most definitely change over time and maybe their major will too, but by them writing down their goals they will be able to envision and plan for their future, which is a great start.
Help them to be a Forward Thinker
No one likes to look backwards and get down on themselves for errors and misunderstandings. If your child is feeling down and lost during college, remind them to look forward to the future. Yes, it may sound cliché, but since college is a constant learning experience it will take time for your child to figure out which direction to take. However, when they do get the hang of school and are excelling in a major that they love, you will still be there to offer them love and support every step of the way. Plus there is always outside help and tutors that will help too when they are fully involved in a fun major!
